Installation Notes for repowering some Troybilt Pony
Models with the Tecumseh OHH50  5.0 h.p. Engine
(For tiller built after 1990 with model numbers 15000 and up)

  1. Remove old engine (save all hardware).
  2. Remove pulleys from old engine (make note of current mounting direction).
  3. Locate the drive pulley space and cut off approximately 1/4".
  4. Install the washer, spacer and drive pulley on new engine and secure.
  5. Install the reverse pulley. Make sure that the pulley shoulder is away from the engine.  This is opposite from the direction it was when you removed it.  Note: Do not secure pulley in position at this time.
  6. Install the drive belt on the tiller transmission.
  7. Install the supplied reverse belt (part no. 37243) on the tiller transmission.
  8. Mount and secure engine to frame with existing hardware.
  9. Check alignment of drive and reverse belts. Secure the reverse pulley.  Note: If drive spacer is too short, Troy-Bilt shims, part no. 1138-2 can be used to bring the pulleys into alignment.
  10. Check drive and reverse belt engagements and adjust as necessary.
  11. Reinstall the belt guard.
  12. Attach throttle control.

  13. Note: if unit is equipped with a bumper, you will have to remove 1/4" from the end of the choke lever.

  14. Electric Start Models:
  15. Refer to enclosed wiring diagrams for reference.
  16. Plug the wire harness connector into the connector coming from engine.  Locate the red lead coming from the solenoid.  Locate the green lead coming from the starter switch.  Cut the red and green wire to the proper length.  Connect red lead wire to the red pigtail wire.  Connect the green lead wire to green pigtail wire.
  17. Attach the battery lead wire to the starter (see diagram with engine).

* Note - The Tecumseh engines shown above are no longer available.
Use Briggs model 120292-0570 instead
